General Library Objectives

The general library objectives of the Louisville Public Library shall be:

    • To collect, catalog, classify, organize and, preserve collections of books and non-print materials, which will provide for the cultural, informational and recreational needs of the community.
       
    • To provide opportunity for lifelong learning for youth and adults.

Use of the Library

The policy of the Louisville Library Board of Trustees prohibits employees from discriminating against patrons on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, marital status, or age.

The Library will serve all residents of the City of Louisville and other persons served by a hometown library.

The use of the Library or its services may be denied for due cause. Such cause may be failure to return books or to pay penalties, destruction of library property, disturbance of other patrons, or any other objectionable conduct on library premises.

All circulation records shall be kept confidential in accordance with Colorado Library Law, (Colorado Revised Statutes, 24-90-119).

Services and Resources of the Library

The Director shall be responsible for the selection and organization of books and non-print materials that best meet the needs of the community. Professional staff shall assist in selection process.

The Library accepts responsibility for attempting to secure information beyond its own resources. The Library staff shall request for its patrons materials not owned through consortia and interlibrary loan services. The Library staff shall also make patrons aware of collection strengths and related resources offered by other libraries.

Library services shall be provided during the hours which best meet the needs of the community and according to the library budget.

The Library’s professional staff shall offer services and collections to meet the cultural and informational needs of the community. Regularly scheduled children’s programs shall be offered.

The library director and staff shall inform the public about the Library’s resources, programs, and services, utilizing the media, and City and Library publications.

The Library shall be staffed by a director and appropriate support staff as needed to perform library functions. Human Resources matters will be handled in compliance with City practice.

Issuance of Library Cards

Adult Card: (ages 17 and over)
An adult must furnish a valid and current driver license or qualifying photo id and proof of current address. Qualifying forms of identification are on file at the Library circulation desk.

Children's Card: (birth through age 16)
Library cards are issued to children with a signature from a parent or guardian and identification as stated above for adults. Children must be present in order to be issued a library card.

Library cards expire every two years for all cardholders and can be renewed provided the cardholder still meets eligibility requirements.

Charges and Fees

Charges and fees will be assessed per the Library’s administrative procedures for lost, overdue, or damaged library materials; for lost library cards; and for printing and copying.

The Library reserves the right to refuse to check out materials to any borrower with accumulated fees exceeding $10.00 until fees are paid. An expired card may not be renewed unless all fees are paid.

Materials Not Returned

It is a violation of City Ordinance for any person to willfully retain any library material. The City will engage in a reasonable correspondence related to materials not returned. Correspondence and legal action will be in accordance with the Louisville Municipal Code, Section 9.60.010, which reads as follows:

It is unlawful for any person to fail to return any book, newspaper, magazine, pamphlet, photograph or any other items or material belonging to the public library of the city within 30 days after receipt of a written overdue notice requesting the return of the item or items. Violators of this section shall be subject to a fine equal to the cost of the material not returned, plus a $5.00 replacement charge and a $5.00 billing fee.
