Welcome to Your Library!
The Louisville Public Library launched a new, special edition ‘My First Library Card’ for our youngest patrons in April 2021.
How it works:
Visit the Children's Services desk and ask to sign up your child for a My First Library Card.
Our staff will ask a few questions to create the new account in our library system. We will also ask to see a Photo ID of the parent/guardian.* This process doesn't take long, but to get a head start, you can pre-register your child online and let our staff know that you have done this step when you visit.
We will offer bells for your child to ring in celebration if they would like to do so, but no pressure, if a loud celebration is not for them, our staff is happy to celebrate quietly. We will let your child lead this celebration in the way that is most comfortable for them!
Your child will get a My First Library Card sticker to mark this awesome milestone!
We also have a My First Library Card poster which is a great photo backdrop and we encourage you to take pictures of your child with their new card! We would love to see and share your photos on our Library Facebook page, if you would like to share your pictures with us, you can email them to us.
* If you do not have a Photo ID with you when you come in to register your child for their card, or if your child comes in with a non-parent/guardian caregiver (grandparent/nanny), no problem! Your child will still get to do all of the celebrating and walk out with their new card! The card will be set up with a limit of 3 check outs until a parent or guardian with a Photo ID can come in to update the card full access.
