The Makerspace is home to our LulzBot Mini 3D Printer. This printer uses PLA, a bioplastic filament made from corn. PLA has a low melting point, which means you don’t want to create anything that needs to be strong! You can make your model stronger by increasing the infill or making the walls thicker.

What is 3D printing?

You can find an excellent guide to 3D printing here!

Who can print?

3D printing is offered to Louisville Library cardholders, but only library staff and trained volunteers can operate the printer. If you are printing from the catalog, you will need to stay with the printer during your entire print so you can let us know if anything goes wrong. If you have submitted your own file for printing, the library will print your file for you!

What can I print?

You have a few choices on printing:

  • Any object from our 3D Print Catalog, which is always expanding. Due to demand and limited resources, each customer is limited to a single 2-hour slot each week.
  • You can submit an application for your own .stl design to us to review and print using the eform below.
  • Any object from our 3D Accessibility Catalog - These are objects designed to assist those with disabilities, arthritis, or other conditions. Please limit requests to one request every two weeks as these files can be quite large.

Getting Started

Creating Files

We offer 3D Modeling Open Labs twice a month. Check our Makerspace Calendar for dates and times.

You can also download objects from sites like Thingiverse, or use modeling software like SketchUp, Tinkercad, Blender or Mineways to make your own designs. Always export your objects as an .stl file.
